250 sailors take part in Roses in a Championship full of stars

The Laser Master European Championship, organized by the GEN (Grup d’Esports Nàutics Roses) has started today in Roses with the celebration of the two scheduled races with South easterly wind between 5 and 7 knots in the first race, and up to 9 in the second one. Competitors have been divided into two different tracks, one for Radials and the other one for Standards.

 

The weather forecast announces light winds for the next two days of competition. This circumstance has benefited the Olympic medal winner, twice World Champion and Europe Champion Mónica Azón in the category Yngling, from CN El Masnou, who participates for the first time in an European Laser Master, in the category Radial Apprentice reserved for sailors between 35 and 44 years old. Coming fourth and sixth in each of the races, she is placed fourth with a general of 10 points. The British John Emmett, well known in this category and author of the book “Be Your Own Tactics Coach” has won both races, placing him first with a general of two points.

 

In Radial Master, category from 45 to 54 years old, the best spanish who has classified is Pablo Gomeza from RCM Abra in fifth position, with 10 points while the first place is taken by the british Stephen Cockeril with 4 points. In Radial Gran Master, category between 55 and 64 years old, Ignasi Tusquets from CN Vilasar de Mar, coming fourth and second in the races, has made it to the second place with 6 points. Behind is Max Hunt with 3 points. In the most  veteran group Laser Radial, the Great Grand Master from 65 years old, Hens Wittenberg has come first with 4 points.

In Laser Standard, category Apprentice, one of the favourites, the greek Adonis Bougiouris, World Laser Radial Champion 1999, who fought to representate his country in the London Olympic Games, has come second and first, placing him first overall with a general of 3 points. In second place, with 5 points is Carlos Echavarri, who defends the European title, coming third and second in the races. In the Master category, Toni Roig from CV Calella has achieved the third place with 8 points after coming fifth and third in the races.
